Building your own bathroom spa: why and how
Posted on novembre 17, 2013 by Frank
If you have a job with big responsibilities or if your kids are still pretty young, there are good chances that you have a stressful life. With a tight schedule, it can be very hard to find time to take a day off at the spa or to find other ways to relax. Relaxation is important for your health, though, so you have to think about alternatives to take care of yourself.
Before going any further, let’s answer a question: why are spas so popular? There are actually many reasons to use one. First of all, it is an incredible product to cure arthritis pain and to help sore muscles to recover: bodybuilders and people that train on a regular basis will find out that a spa can do wonders! Other health conditions such as headaches can be relieved because of it. It is also a great way to fight insomnia by elevating the body’s temperature, which really helps to fall asleep. Finally, as we said before, the spa is a great way for many people to relax.

This could be you soon.
Should you give up on all these benefits? If you are a bit creative and have a budget of 2000 USD, considered building a home-made spa. The idea is not as crazy and not as hard as it sounds!
The atmosphere is very important
Before thinking about the “physical” spa, you’ll have to work on the general aspect of your bathroom. It has to be a haven of peace so you can spend 30 minutes and feel completely regenerated when you leave the room.
How do you make it so? First, choose a paint color that makes you feel good. In general, colors such as jade green, misty blue or soft brown are very good choices. Then, work on the lighting of your bathroom. Installing dimmers is a very good way to make the atmosphere closer to a spa. If you plan to use it with your partner, it will also make things even more romantic! Then, bring a small radio to diffuse relaxing music. Make sure that it is in a spot where water cannot reach it, though, as water and electronic devices never work well together. Finally, adding a nice scent thanks to aromatic candles should be considered as well.
Do not neglect the atmosphere when you are looking for the perfect relaxing moment!
Building the actual spa
You are now ready to work on the physical project. You could buy a real spa if you had a very large budget to invest in your bathroom project, but this is not what this article is about. The next tips will help you to create a cheaper alternative that will still significantly improve your comfort.
The best way would be to convert your bathtub by using a “whirlpool kit”. A few companies offer jet systems that can be installed on fiberglass, acrylic, cultured marble, steel and cast iron bathtubs; it will probably fit what you have at home! It is an installation that can be realized in about 4 to 6 hours depending on the product and your abilities in home improvement. The price of such a system is close to 500 USD, excluding the equipment you’ll need to install the system. The bill might go even a bit higher if you decide to hire a professional to set it up for you!
If you prefer taking showers, you’ll also have a way to make your condition better. By buying a shower panel, you will transform a one-jet shower nozzle to a multiple-jets column. If you enjoy soft massages, it might be worth having a shot at this product.
