Tourism: linking Montreal to other big cities

A city’s economic and touristic vitality can be analyzed by looking at the type of direct flights it has in comparison to its competing metropolis. Montreal, for example, is far away from Toronto when it comes to direct flights’ statistics. Even though Toronto is linked to major cities of emerging countries such as Beijing, Santiago and Sao Paulo, Montreal’s businessmen all have to waste time in stopovers at Toronto’s or New York’s airport when they need to travel that far.

The city council recently decided to submit a motion asking Transport Canada to move more flights to Pierre-Elliott Trudeau airport.

Beneficial for tourism

When it comes to taking vacations, people usually shop for quick flights and cheaper plane tickets. Montreal is currently not as complicated to reach as a city like Kathmandu is,  but a lot of potential visitors still cannot access it via a direct route.

Montreal hotels and main attractions would definitely benefit from new direct flights and Coalition Montreal, the political party that initiated the motion that we mentioned earlier, is decided to push for these new tourists to be charmed by the metropolis.

Beneficial for attracting new companies

Councillor Marvin Rotrand also mentioned that new businesses were being scared from Montreal because of current policies. More specifically, investors increasingly decide to implant their head offices in other cities since it is harder to plan important meetings with limited airport accessibility.

Cities like Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver have greatly benefited from the situation, but the city council believes than it is time to rebalance it and make Montreal an international hub for business and tourism.

We will see what will happen in the coming months, but a comity was already formed to discuss it in 2013 and we still haven’t heard much from it yet!
